Ever since 1979, the first Sunday after Labor Day has been declared Grandparents Day. Thank you to President Jimmy Carter! It makes the perfect day to slow down and spend time together. Whether it’s sharing stories, exploring local history, or just enjoying a simple day out, Morris County offers some unique ways to make the day memorable. From nostalgic train rides and scenic garden walks to hands-on museum adventures, there are activities that grandparents and grandchildren alike will treasure. Here are some of our favorite local ideas to help you plan a day filled with smiles, laughter, and lasting memories.
Did you know we have our own Railway Museum right here in Morris County? They are particularly popular when they have Santa or the Easter Bunny on board but in September they roll out the red carpet for Grandparents day. Take a 45 minute ride along the Whippanong Trail. You can purchase ticket in the luxury Lackawanna #2454, the Club Car or the Caboose! Trains depart at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm or 4pm, working perfectly around little ones naptimes! It promises to be a memorable day for all. We highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
Have a love of plants and/or photography? Register your family for the Family Photo Scavenger Hunt at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Hunt is available 10am to 4pm. Go at your open pace, just be sure to finish by 4pm to claim your prize.
Check out our events calendar for other ongoing activities such as the Fairy Trail and the Ice Cream Trail.
Hopefully the weather is on our side. If you are looking for something flexible and free, check out our parks guide. With over 175 of them in the county, there is bound to be something perfect near you! Maybe even pack a picnic!
While heading out can be lots of fun, don't discount time at home. Maybe you make playdough or play a boardgame. Teacher the grandchildren a card game or look at old family movies. It's all about being together.
Do you know of other area events, we would love to add them here. Please email, sandyn@macaronikid.com
