Labor Day is coming up soon! But what exactly is it, why do we celebrate it and what's a kid friendly way to explain it?
Labor Day is a holiday to say thank you to workers—all the people who help our country run every single day. Teachers, doctors, builders, shop workers, farmers, bus drivers… you name it! Without them, things wouldn’t get done.
It’s always on the first Monday in September, which is awesome because that means it’s a three-day weekend. More time for picnics, parades, and fun!
The first Labor Day happened a long time ago, in 1882. Back then, workers had really tough jobs. They worked long hours in places that weren’t very safe, and they didn’t get paid much. So a group of workers in New York City decided to take a day off and march together to ask for better working conditions. After the march, they stayed to eat food and enjoy the day with their families. That was the very first Labor Day celebration! 🥪🎈
In 1894, the government made Labor Day an official holiday for the whole country. Now, every year, we celebrate the people who work hard to make our communities strong and happy.
So, whether you’re going to a parade, having a barbecue, or just relaxing, remember: Labor Day is a big “thank you” to workers everywhere! 🙌

All weekend long is the famous Lead East Car Show at the Parsippany Hilton
Saturday, August 30
1:30pm - Join the Boonton Parade. Fire Departments from all around the area come with their special trucks to compete for many awards. The parade stages in the West Boonton area and proceed down Main Street to Grant Street, to Old Boonton Road, ending at Boonton High School. Lots of fun and spirit along the route
Sunday, August 31
10am - Cheer on the Mendham parade. It goes from Borough Park down Main Street, When the parade is over, they have a carnival and concert.
3pm Concert: Jersey Sounds at the Park Lake Gazebo
10pm Fireworks at the Boonton Carnival
Monday, September 1
11am-3pm The Hopatcong Monthly Market (120 River Styx Rd)
